Olympic Controversy
At the Olympics, last night's men's gymnastics was interrupted when the crowd went wild after some pretty bad scoring by the judges. Russian Alexei Nemov performed one of the most incredible gymnastic routines ever seen on the high bar. His score... a 9.725, which placed him in third with three gymnasts left to compete. The crowd was right in booing the officials, and they did so for over ten minutes. But the officials responded by changing the score, to 9.762. The score was still too low, as it left Alexei in third, and ultimately the remaining performances took him out of medal contention. But audience reaction should not affect judging, and Olympic officials let it do just that last night. In fairness, the Russian was graceful, pleading for the audience to calm down. He deserved the gold medal, in my mind, for both his performance, and his graceful response.
Finally, where were the chairs and tables in tonight's wrestling match? I was highly disappointed. I guess The Rock decided not to compete this year or something.
