Pretty Close

I was having fun with Edmunds yesterday, and I wanted to know what cars are actually selling for, compared to MSRP. Jennifer loves the RX-8, but it's pretty expensive. (I also think it's ugly, but that's okay.)

I optioned one out... a Velocity Red RX-8 Automatic with the Grand Touring Package (including Red and Black Leather).

AT Grand Touring Package
Includes Xenon headlights, Dynamic Stability Control w/traction control, Tochigi Fuji Limited-Slip Differential, 18" alloy wheels and 225/45 ZR18 tires, Bose audio, Auto day/night mirror w/Homelink, moonroof, leather seat trim, faux leather door trim, heated seats, 8-way power driver's seat, lumbar support, fog lamps, heated mirrors, larger brakes and Sport Tuned suspension.

You have to get the GT package to get leather, so I went with that, plus it has some nice options. That is the ONLY option I selected.

MSRP was $30885. The dealer invoice was $28278.

This morning I got a reply.

Hi Rainier, I did find a Mazda RX8 pretty close to your specifications, and what it doesn't have i priced out through my parts manager. Whitewater Pearl/Black Leather, Automatic, Grand Touring, Navigation, 6 CD, Front, and rear Splash Guards, Moonroof/w Wind Deflector, Rear Wing Spoiler, Rotary Accent Pkg,Cargo net, Collapsible Cargo Carrier, Cargo Tray, Cargo organizer, All Weather Mats, Door edge Guards.
The MSRP is $36643.00. Your Special Internet price is $32488.00.

So, not only is the car not red, but it comes with about $6000 of extra unwanted accessories.

The dealer wanted me to contact him as soon as possible so he could sell this wonderful car to me. I love how dealers really want to sell the car to you TODAY! What's it going to take to get you into this car TODAY!? Geez, what's it going to take to get you to be something other than a disgusting slimeball.

I tell you something though. Yesterday we went to Lee Johnson Mazda. They are also a Chevrolet dealer, but with the exception of a Corvette I would never buy a Chevy (or most other American cars for that matter.)

Jennifer and I get out of my car, and up comes the creepy salesman, right? But the guy turns out to be all right. "When are you looking to buy? 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, a year?" Really, a salesman who understands I don't want to buy a car TODAY?! He's not going to chase me and offer me TWO turkeys to buy a Mustang RIGHT NOW! It was just a breath of fresh air, you know?
